It happens roughly every nineteen months, for about six weeks, and tradition reads it as the season to love what you have before you go looking for more. Your wardrobe, your subscriptions and the thing in the garage have been waiting for this.
The short astronomy
Venus is the planet we pass most closely, and every nineteen months or so, as it swings between us and the Sun, it appears to slow, stop and slide backward against the stars for about six weeks. This one starts in Scorpio and backs into Libra before it turns around. Nothing is actually reversing. It is a trick of the angle, like a car you overtake on the motorway seeming to drift backward.
What Venus is in charge of
In astrology, Venus rules love, beauty, pleasure and value: what you want, what you find beautiful and what you think a thing is worth. It rules Taurus, the sign of possessions, and Libra, the sign of balance and fair exchange. So when Venus goes retrograde, tradition turns the question around. Not "what do I want next?" but "what do I already have, and do I still love it?"
That is a surprisingly useful question to be handed by a planet, because the answer is usually "more than I remember, and some of it I have forgotten I pay for".
The six-week audit of what you own

- Fix, clean or finish something. The half-mended chair, the bike with the flat tyre, the camera with the dead battery. A retrograde favours going back to things.
- Price what you own, honestly. Not to sell it, just to know. Venus rules value, and most people have no idea what their stuff is worth, in money or in use.
- Notice what the tradition says about new luxuries. Astrologers read these six weeks as a time to re-value what you have rather than to add to it. Take that as a prompt to reflect, not a rule: the planet has no opinion about your shopping, and nothing here tells you what to do with your money.
What it does not do
It does not move markets. Nobody has ever found a reliable market effect from a Venus retrograde, and our own tests of charts against returns came back empty, which we published.
