Mercury Retrograde, Explained for Your Wallet
The next Mercury retrograde runs from about October 24 to November 13, 2026. The internet will blame it for your lost parcel, your ex's text and your card declining at the pharmacy. Here is what the old tradition actually says it is for, and the three-week money admin it happens to be very good at.
What is actually happening up there
Nothing is going backward. Mercury orbits the Sun faster than we do, and three or four times a year Earth's view of it swings round so that, against the background stars, it appears to stop, drift back for about three weeks, stop again and carry on. Astronomers call the stopping points stations. Astrologers call the backward stretch retrograde. Mercury, meanwhile, is fine.
This time it stations retrograde in Scorpio and turns direct in the same sign. Scorpio is the sign tradition gives to other people's money: debts, shared accounts, taxes, the fine print. If you wanted a retrograde to be about your finances specifically, you could hardly have ordered a better one.
What tradition says it is for
Mercury rules messages, contracts, paperwork and commerce. The traditional reading of the retrograde is not "disaster". It is "review". Anything with re in front of it is favoured: reread, reconsider, renegotiate, reconcile, and the extremely unglamorous refile. New launches and new signatures are the things tradition would rather wait.
You do not need to believe a planet can see your inbox to notice that a recurring three-week reminder to check your paperwork is useful. As ancient advice goes, it has aged better than most.
The three-week wallet review
A small list, in the spirit of the thing. None of it involves a market.
- Reread your subscriptions. Open your card statement and read every recurring charge out loud. The one you forgot about is not the planet's fault, but it is a very Mercury discovery.
- Reconcile one account. Pick the one you look at least and match it to the statement, line by line. Mercury is the planet of small details, and small details are where the fees live.
- Renegotiate one bill. Phone, internet or insurance. A retrograde is traditionally a time to go back over old agreements, and a renewal is exactly that.
- Recheck the fine print before you sign anything new. Tradition's one real warning. A lease, a loan, a contract with auto-renew: read it twice and ask the question you were going to skip.
- Refile the receipts. The pile of paper, the folder of PDFs, the email tagged "tax stuff". Scorpio would approve.
What the app does with it
On your calendar, a retrograde week is a soft penalty, not a padlock. Days inside it score a little lower, and when you tap a day it says in plain points how much Mercury moved the score. We do this because the traditions do, not because the retrograde moves prices. We tested whether charts carry a return signal and published the answer: they do not. The retrograde earns its place as a reminder to review, which is a better job anyway. There is a longer piece on how the engine scores a retrograde if you want the working.
The dates
After this one, Mercury goes retrograde again from February 9 to March 3, 2027, then June 10 to July 4, and October 7 to October 28. Put the next one in your calendar now and call it what it is: a free, recurring appointment with your own paperwork.
Questions people ask
When is the next Mercury retrograde?
From about October 24 to November 13, 2026, in Scorpio. The next ones run from February 9 to March 3, June 10 to July 4, and October 7 to October 28, 2027.
Is Mercury retrograde bad for money?
Tradition reads it as a time to review rather than to start things. It has no measurable effect on markets, and we tested charts against returns and published the result: no signal.
What should I do with my money during Mercury retrograde?
Nothing dramatic. Tradition favours reviewing: reread subscriptions, reconcile an account, recheck any contract before you sign it.
