Eight characters, four pillars

BaZi literally means eight characters. Your birth year, month, day, and hour each get a pillar made of two characters, a heavenly stem and an earthly branch, drawn from the traditional Chinese sexagenary calendar. The day divides into twelve two-hour blocks, and the zi block runs from 11 pm to 1 am, so midnight babies get filed with the night owls.

The character that matters most is your day stem, called the Day Master. That is you, in element form. There are five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), each in a yin or yang flavor, so ten possible selves. A yang Fire Day Master is a bonfire. A yin Fire Day Master is a candle. BaZi then asks how much support your element has across all eight characters. Here is the classical move. The five elements produce and control each other in two cycles: Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, Water feeds Wood. And for control: Wood breaks Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal chops Wood.

In BaZi doctrine, your wealth element (cai) is the element your Day Master controls. Wealth is what you can act on. So a strong chart is steered toward its wealth element first, then the element it produces. A weak chart gets the opposite prescription: the element that produces it (the resource) and its own element (peer support). Get stronger first, then go get the money. It is the same advice your most grounded friend gives.

The five-element industry map
